How Do the Appointments Work?

1st Appt: Initial Consultation (1.5-hour) is a comprehensive review of nutrition, physical activity, wellness assessment, intake forms and medical, family, and health behavior history. Blood pressure, heart rate, body composition, and girth measurements are taken. You leave this appointment with food, activity, and stress goals and reminder of what motivates you to make changes “stick”.

2nd Appt: Report and Education Session (1-hour) where 1) we discuss your risk factors based on the assessments, 2) you are given a meal plan that is calculated specifically for you, considering multiple factors that may alter your caloric needs, and 3) you are educated on how to make these changes happen in your day given your challenges, schedule, and multiple roles in life, 4) we set behavioral goals.

Follow-ups: All other follow-up appointments are 30 minutes unless we are doing a re-measurement at the end of your wellness or weight loss package (when body composition is measured again-1 hour appointment). All follow ups include weigh-in, follow up on previous goals, setting new goals, discussion of trouble spots and how they were handled, discussion of anticipated trouble spots (holiday eating, traveling, dining out, etc.), handouts tailored to clients’ needs. The number of follow-ups varies (See Selecting the Right Package for Me).

All Appts: Weigh-in, discuss previous goals, set new goals, health coaching and Medical Nutrition Therapy are provided at every appointment.

Meeting Frequency

These appointments are typically 2 weeks apart to allow you time to reach the goals set in the previous appointment. As these changes become second nature or more automatic, we spread the visits out to allow you to increase the confidence in being able to maintain the changes made on your own.

Packaged Services

Often insurance only covers 3-4 visits with a dietitian per year, but behavior changes often take longer to become habits. Often the 12-week or 6-month packages are more appropriate for wellness programs, weight loss, or chronic disease management–including eating disorders, are more economical, and address health behavior change more effectively. Programs for weight loss, wellness, or management of health conditions or chronic disease risk factors are tailored to you. Includes booklets, materials, and access to online food and activity trackers.

Our focus is making behavior change easier, but these changes are not a quick fix. Sometimes you will see immediate benefits (more energy, better sense of control, etc.), but behavior changes often take more than 2-3 appointments to achieve.

    • We do not process insurance, but you are provided a superbill for our services that can be submitted to your insurance company if your policy covers our services.

  • 3 day diet record evaluated using computerized nutrient analysis to identify deficiencies

  • BMI, percent body fat, percent muscle mass, visceral fat, resting metabolic rate, blood pressure, and girth measurements are taken to determine risk for chronic disease and track changes.

Studies show that people looking to improve their fitness and improve their health achieve significantly greater results when using a dietitian or wellness coach. Anna will increase the benefits of wellness by designing a tailored program for you that combines medical nutrition therapy, health promotion and health education, and wellness coaching.

Often health behavior change is made easier when we have supportive individuals making these changes with us. The small groups are a great way to master the balance of not getting lost in a huge program and getting the support and frequent accountability that you need to keep on track with your goals.

do not process insurance yet, but I do provide you all documentation needed to seek reimbursement by your insurance company for an out-of-network provider. Not all insurance companies cover my services, so it is best to call your insurance company before our first appointment to see if it covers Medical Nutrition Therapy for your diagnosis. You may also be required to meet a deductible for out-of-network providers before you will be reimbursed. These are the worst-case scenarios; I do have other clients who submit and get 100% reimbursement based on their plan.

Flexible Spending Account/Health Savings Accounts/Wellness Services

Often Flexible Spending Accounts or Health Savings Accounts do reimburse 100% for my services and wellness programs for most large insurance carriers will reimburse for at least some of my services as wellness if your “out-of-network” deductible is high. Some of these plans require that a physician referral is necessary for reimbursement, so it is always best to check with your insurance plan to learn their requirements.

Tax Deductions
According to the Internal Revenue Service, obesity treatments can qualify for tax deductions.

Medicare Coverage
Unfortunately, Medicare only covers Medical Nutrition Therapy for diabetes and chronic kidney disease despite its effectiveness in managing a host of other conditions. I have decided instead to offer a sliding fee scale to all Medicare recipients to increase access to MNT services.
